Patience

By this time last year, the Rideau Canal was open for business.

This is not the case for 2010. The NCC's website says the ice is not safe to skate on yet, so we will have to be patient and wait for the green flag.

This weekend crews were on the ice preparing more than four kilometres of skating area – removing snow and flooding the ice to make it thicker and stronger for the anticipated traffic.

The NCC says 14 consecutive days of temperatures dipping below -15 degrees celsius (excluding the bitter, bitter wind) and an ice thickness of at least 30 centimetres are required before the Canal is safe to skate on.

Judging from the forecast for the next six days, wear a life jacket if you plan a rogue-skate any time soon.
