While excitement will be building for Hallowe'en 2010, Election Day in the regional municipality of Ottawa-Carleton falls a few days earlier – taking our minds off of visions of full-size chocolate bars and vandalism for the time being.

I don't think anybody today is planning their costume, but lots of attention is on the Mayoral race nine and a half months in advance.

This morning rumours came true that Ontario MPP Jim Watson wants his old job back (being Mayor from 1997 to the year 2000). Watson has stepped down as the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and as representative of Ottawa West Nepean in the Caucus.

Watson was first elected to Ottawa city council in 1991, so he is no stranger to politics. He says he has decided to run after a number of Ottawa residents prodded him to because of non-confidence in the present council.

Media reports say Watson's running will curb the enthusiasm of other potential throne-takers, his high profile an excellent head start in this race.

Incumbent "Mayor Lar" says he will decide in June if he is going to run again. He said in the fall that he would let us know in January, though.

Election Day is October 25th – ironically thanks to Watson's revision of the Municipal Elections Act of 1996 done in his most recent role. The revision has municipal elections take place on the fourth Monday of October.
